How to Prepare for a Plumbing Service Visit

July 18, 2016

Cheat Sheet: How to Prep for a Plumber Visit

Hopefully your home’s plumbing is in great condition and no repairs are needed. In the event that a plumbing problem, or perhaps even a plumbing emergency occurs, it’s important to know how to handle a visit from a professional plumber. Get the most out of a visit from a plumber by following this guide:

Before the Visit

Inspect Other Plumbing

Look for any other plumbing issues throughout the house. If you find any plumbing problems, let your technician know. Not only could other problems be correlated with the initial problem, but it is also more cost effective to only have the plumber visit your home once.

Clear the Area

Clear out the area surrounding the plumbing that needs to be worked on to allow the technician to work efficiently. Keep in mind the plumber may also need to access the main water line and be sure to clean that area up too. This will ensure the plumber is able to work as quickly and safely as possible and your belongings won’t accidentally be damaged.

During the Visit

Keep Pets Out

Keep your pets contained in a different room or outside. Even if your plumber is pet friendly, it’s best to keep them out of the way so they don’t distract the technician from completing the job at hand. Plus, you must keep your pets’ safety in mind and keep them away from tools and plumbing parts that may be laying around.

Share Information

Inform the plumber about the issue at hand. Share any information about the problem and past problems you’ve encountered. Provide as many details as possible. You may not be a plumbing expert, but you are the expert at your home’s functionality and history.

Be a Student

Use the plumbing visit as a learning opportunity. It’s not often you have an expert technician with you working on your home. Give them space when it’s time for concentration, but be attentive and take in any information you can while the technician is there.

After the Visit

Take Notes

It’s easy to think you’ll remember everything, but chances are likely that you’ll forget. Write down what you learned from the plumber, like any tips or DIY repairs you can make yourself in the future. Also, record what the technician did to your home. It’s good to keep track of the history of repairs made on your home, so you can inform any future plumbers.

Check Up

Keep an eye on the plumbing repairs and make sure they are functioning as they should. If anything seems out of place, contact your plumber. It’s best to fix the situation right away before it can worsen. Hopefully everything is working as planned and you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the peace of mind of properly working plumbing.
